In South Korea, all able-bodied men must serve in the military for at least 18 months, although the length of service can vary depending on the type of post.
South Korea's draft begins at age 18, although men can defer until 28, with those in the entertainment professions allowed to defer enlistment until age 30.
The other six members of the group are planning to perform their military service based on their personal plans, HYBE said in a statement.
"The company and BTS members hope to reunite as a group around 2025 following their commitment to service," HYBE said.

But since the 2010s, youth unemployment, economic instability, gender inequality, corruption and social stagnation have led to growing social discontent with the pace of change.

Compulsory military service is a frequent source of social discontent. Controversies include corruption, flexible terms of service for celebrities, dual national service obligations, bullying, and outdated standards for pardons.

It can serve as an important force multiplier in times of national emergency, and can equally serve as an important social equalizer, strengthening the individual's relationship with the nation and society. For many South Koreans, its current form does not fully reflect any of these goals. The debate was marred by emotional and nationalistic rhetoric and political ideology.
On one side are those who see compulsory military service as a fortress. This is seen as important in the context of North Korea's prospects, from invasion to destruction. Also, the conflict between the interests of the United States, Japan, China and Russia is seen as important in the context of the geopolitical situation.

Some also see mandatory military service as a pillar that upholds South Korean traditions and society. It encourages a shared sense of social connection, conformity, order, and national pride. On the other side are those who believe that the current mandatory military service is a hindrance. It is seen as outdated and ineffective in terms of national security. Countries facing similar geopolitical conditions do not limit service to only half the population and allow exceptions for conscientious objection. All Israeli citizens perform mandatory military service, with women serving for approximately two years, and there are designated exceptions for religious students.
Critics say South Korea's mandatory military service system is more likely to train recruits in makeup and skin care than to prepare for the country's defense. Others see compulsory military service as an obstacle to the transformation of South Korean society. It inhibits diversity and inclusion, further marginalizes the socially excluded, and above all, promotes gender inequality.
Reforming South Korea's military service system is a political dilemma with few clear options. Abandoning compulsory military service in favor of extended professional voluntary service would serve national security purposes, but at the same time, would not serve nation-building purposes. Reinstating military service into non-compulsory, better-paid, reserve service would serve national security and nation-building goals, but would likely reinforce social and economic inequality. Reinstating mandatory military service into a modern institution that strengthens diversity and emphasizes gender equality will serve nation-building goals, but may neglect national security goals.

The Moon Jae-in administration is currently planning to reduce mandatory military service to 18 months. In the face of recent events, it also promised to review the exemption system from military service. Both plans have already attracted controversy, and there is little political will to push for further reforms.
